Then I turned and walked toward the house. Behind me, the entire backyard was silent. No laughter, no chatter, just the sound of realization sinking in.
Nicole’s answer was muffled and panicked, and I thought to myself, for the first time in years, she was the one explaining herself, not me. I went into the bathroom, splashed cold water on my face, and stared into the mirror.
I did not look angry. I looked relieved. I had been holding on to something broken, convincing myself that if I just tried harder, it would mend.
Nicole was whispering rapidly to her parents, probably trying to spin the story. The cousins were avoiding eye contact. The aunts were whispering behind their hands.
