After the riot occurred, it was later revealed that approximately 26 confidential human sources working with the FBI were among the protesters demonstrating against the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. These informants were ostensibly present to provide the FBI with information about potential criminal activity. An investigation (of sources) conducted by the Justice Department found that three of the informants had been specifically instructed by the FBI to travel to Washington, D. C. , and monitor certain groups that could pose a problem.
